11 Mai 2007 - Linz, AT - Postlingberg: I visited the unique Postlingbergbahn just before it was `modernised` in 2008-9. This is one of the steepest tram lines in the world, reaching a gradient 11.6% or 1:9 without rack, cable or any other assistance. It was separate from the Linz city tramways because their track is an unusual 900mm wide and the Postlingbergbahn was a metre gauge line. There is the top station showing two of the 1958-built trams - note their Roman numbering system and the continued use of trolley poles. Linz city completely re-gauged the line to 900mm and swept away nearly all these old trams. They put in a connection to their other lines, plus three new low-floor Bombardier Flexity trams specially modified for the steep gradient, so services can now run right through from here to Linz Hauptbahnhof.

11 Mai 2007 - Linz, AT - Remise Kleinmunchen: Inside the main Linz depot and works are these three rarely seen Postlingberg trams, which were the ones that survived the 2008 scrapping and line modernisation and still exist today. Note that they are standing on temporary accommodation bogies - (why? do try and keep up.....)

11 Mai 2007 - Linz, Austria – depot/zajezdnia Kleinmunchen. Postlingberg cars XI, VIII and X stand in the workshop on special 900mm temporary bogies. They were just stored when I visited - now they are possibly scrapped. What a great shame!

8 Mai 2011 - Linz, Pöstlingberg. Jeden z trzech zrewitalizowanych wagonów przez konsorcjum Vossloh Kiepe za 6 milionów €. Konstrukcja tramwaju wszystkim (prócz wyglądem ;-)) dorównuje nowoczesnym trendom budowy wagonów tramwajowych; sterowanie mikroprocesorowe, asynchroniczne silniki, hamulce tarczowe i inne bajery. W tle panorama Linzu.

ESG T2 #XIV

11 Mai 2007 - Linz, Austria – Postlingbergbahn. Two two-car trains pass at one of the intermediate stops. The hooks on the front and rear of each tram are to carry prams and pushchairs. One odd feature of the Postlingbergbahn is the numbering system, using Roman numerals.

11 Mai 2007 - Linz, Austria – Postlingbergbahn. Leaving an intermediate passing loop, the trams hit the heavy gradient once again. Note the use of trolley poles.

11 Mai 2007 - Linz, AT - Urfahr: The lower station of the metre gauge Postlingbergbahn with car #XIV waiting to make its next trip up the very steep ascent. All this was soon to be swept away in the name of progress, when the city tramway, which ended just outside the station, was joined to a regauged and modernised line.

ESG T2 #XVI

11 Mai 2007 - Linz, AT - Polstlingbergbahn: Tram XVI again, with another of the fleet. The trams have just crossed a road on the way up the mountain and have paused for a photograph. Most of these trams were scrapped when the track gauge was narrowed to 900mm and just three survived.

11 Mai 2007 - Linz, AT - Postlingberg: Two of the Postlingberg trams at a passing loop on the way up the mountain. This line was built in 1898 and was originally worked by open-sided trams until the 1950s, when a fleet of these locally-built cars took over. One of the original cars is (was?) still in the depot and came out on special occasions, although since the gauge change I wonder if it can run on the line any more.

11 Mai 2007 - Linz, Austria, Postlingbergbahn. The lower terminus – city trams stop just outside. In a supreme act of official vandalism, all this has been swept away so that low-floor trams can run up the Postlingberg directly from Linz city centre. The line is currently closed and will reopen next year with new 900mm tracks and new trams. I think that just one or two of these old trams will remain for tourists, somehow modernised and re-gauged.

11 Mai 2007 - Linz, Austria – Postlingbergbahn. The Postlingbergbahn is a separate, metre-gauge line to the top of a hill. The maximum gradient is a crazy 12%, operated as a normal tramway without rack or cable – just special brakes to control the descent. Here, you can see the huge gradient as a tram approaches a road crossing.
