Frankfurt really has one of the weirdest bits of rail infrastructure in Germany. The U-Bahn is a mix of tram routes, tunnels, and a suburban railway (north of Heddernheim - used to have goods traffic there as well), whereas routes 12 and 14 incorporate the former "Forest Railways" (Waldbahnen), steam trains that used to take Frankfurters to the woods south of the city on nicer days. Before the Stadtbahn cars were introduced to the "A"-route (U1,U2,U3), the services were run by GT6 cars (and trailers) with extensions at the doors - http://drehscheibe-online.ist-im-web.de/forum/read.php?17,3180190,3180190
