13 Juni 2009 - Valenciennes (FR) – Saint Waast. Near the Transvilles depot, a tram to Espace Villars running through a pleasant strip of parkland. The Valenciennes tramway makes extensive use of these grass-filled tracks, which look very nice but obviously need some maintenance – many cities in Poland have grass-filled tracks, too, of course, but these are not quite the same!

13 Juni 2009 - Valenciennes (FR) – Solange Tonini. More empty fields on the line to Denain. These trams are very smart and were probably built locally – Alstom has a factory in Valenciennes. Like many of the ‘new’ French tramways, the design is stylish and attractive.

13 Juni 2009 - Valenciennes (FR) – Denain, Rue de Villars. Near the southern end of the line, tracks run in the centre of a local shopping street in a neat reservation. Much use is made of these grass-covered tracks - this is real grass, although from a distance it looks like Astroturf.
