Trams (streecars/LRT): since 1889
First horsecar opened 26 Mar 1856
First electric tram (streetcar) opened 1889
First underground section - Tremont Street Subway - opened 1 Sep 1897.   By 1960s, almost all traditional street-surface sections were abandoned, leaving only two LRT systems in operation until today: Green Line and the Ashmont-Mattapan High Speed Line.


Subway (heavy rail):
Red Line: first section opened 1912
Orange Line: first elevated section opened 1901, subsequently converted into subway since 1910s
Blue Line: tram (streetcar) tunnel under Boston Harbor opened 1904, converted into subway in 1924

Electric trolleybus (trackless trolley) - 1936-2023:

First line opened 11 Apr 1936
Dynamic growth in 1940s and early 1950s. At its peak in 1952, three unconnected systems were in service (northern Boston, Dorchester, Arborway), comprising the 3rd largest trolleybus system in the U.S.

By 1963, almost entire system was shut down, except for the four routes operating out of the Harvard terminal.
On 12 Mar 2022, classic trolleybus operations on the last two lines (71 and 73) were finally ceased, with both routes were converted to hybrid diesel bus.

Silver Line - BRT system with an underground tunnel section equipped with trolleybus overhead wiring - opened 17 Dec 2004.
Dual-mode Neoplan buses operated in trolleybus mode through the tunnel until 10 July 2023, when they were finally replaced with hybrid-electric buses.
